Module 8: Structured Literacy: Read Aloud (Barksdale Reading Institute)

Learn how to maximize the read aloud by incorporating all the components of reading while also building general knowledge!

Target Audience:
K-6 teachers and Administrators, Interventionists, and Special Education teachers.

From this module, participants will be able to…

  • Recall benefits and limitations of a read aloud.
  • Demonstrate use of the of the 6 steps of a well planned read aloud.
  • Demonstrate how to write objectives that follow the SMART mnemonic.
  • Analyze the steps of a read aloud exemplar.
  • Name some criteria for choosing texts and selecting vocabulary.
  • xplain the difference between a purpose and an objective.
  • Apply before reading activities to the book being used for purpose of the session.
  • Analyze the steps of a read aloud exemplar.
  • Write questions that follow the CROWD mnemonic on the literal, inferential and situation level.
  • Demonstrate how to use various elements of the print as a way to better understand a book.
  • Construct during and after reading exercises that align with the skills and strategies.
  • Demonstrate an outline of a read aloud to the group.
