Module 5: Structured Literacy: Fluency (Barksdale Reading Institute)

Fluency is more than the rate of reading! Learn how to teach fluency and its vital role in making instructional decisions for students.

Target Audience:
K-6 teachers and Administrators, Interventionists, and Special Education teachers.

From this module, participants will be able to…

  • Define what fluency and accuracy are and identify key characteristics.
  • Explain where fluency falls within the integrated process of reading (Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Rope Model) and how it serves as a gateway to identifying reading gaps.
  • Demonstrate how to administer and score a fluency screener and apply national norms.
  • Demonstrate strategies for teaching the subskills of fluency.
  • Apply the SVR to identify who and what types of intervention are needed.
  • Follow the Assessment Cycle to determine next steps in identifying the lowest deficit skill.
  • Teach self-monitoring skills to boost accuracy.
  • Administer and score decoding surveys and phonics/spelling screener.
  • Explain and demonstrate the steps in an evidence-based intervention and how it differs from Tier 1 instruction and tutoring.
