Module 4: Structured Literacy: Phonics

Learn how to teach phonics explicitly in the lower grades and leave with practice strategies to help students become fluent decoders!

Target Audience:
K-3 teachers and administrators.

From this module, participants will be able to…

  • Explain what research says about how phonics is processed in the brain and how it should be taught.
  • Describe the importance of the elements of an explicit phonics instruction.
  • Accurately order the sequence of the phonics continuum.
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies for each of the generalizations of the phonics continuum.
  • Score a diagnostic decoding assessment and identify the lowest deficit skill.
  • Create a lesson plan that demonstrates explicit phonics instruction.
