Module 10: Structured Literacy for Leaders

Design a schoolwide literacy plan and utilize the coaching cycle to support literacy instruction!

Target Audience:
Elementary Administrators, Curriculum Coordinators, Instructional Coaches, or Lead Teachers.

From this module, participants will be able to…

  • Explain the contributions the NRP (2000) and the IES Report (2016) made to improving literacy instruction.
  • Explain how the brain processes language for reading. 
  • Recognize explicit instruction of the 5 Components of Reading + 3.
  • Support teachers in managing time, structure and content during a Structured Literacy Block.
  • Calculate catch-up growth to close the achievement gap.
  • Apply the Simple View of Reading to group students for differentiated instruction.
  • Apply an Assessment Cycle and the Simple View of Reading to identify deficits and group students for differentiated instruction.
  • Use the coaching cycle to support teachers in setting goals and changing practice.
  • Identify the right starting point in working with teachers to improve practice. Draft preliminary goals for a school-wide plan that incorporates Structured Literacy; identify the immediate next steps.
